Sea Water Level Rise
Published on by Pardeep Kumar Bogra
Glaciers are melting, sea water level rising, we may divert river water to deserts. Is this possible to build pipelined canals from Europe to Sahara desert ? There are many other deserts around the World including Thar desert in Rajasthan, India.
We do not have sufficient resources to store all the rain water, when excess water is released from Dams, most of the times it results in flood. Can we release excess water in open large desert area for which we do not have any place/resource to store ?

Dear Mr. Pradeep 2 foot sea level rise scenario, projected to occur as soon as 2060. City of Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, State of Florida, United States. The model uses a V-DATUM sea level surface developed by NOAA to determine the elevation of the mean higher high water events. The land elevation was generated using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) remote sending technology that accurately measures elevations using airborne lasers. The 2007 LiDAR elevation dataset was developed for the Florida Division of Emergency Management. State of Florida, United States. Map was produced by Broward County in partnership with (SFWMD) and (NOAA). December 2015. Palm Beach, Broward County and Dade County (Miami), State of Florida, United States.

Dear Mr Pradeep
I appreciate your concern for melting glaciers, non-availability of water in desert and exploring possibility of diverting water. Some of my comments -
- Every country has ownership of property in their land and question is -are they willing?
- who should bear the cost of that project and exploring techno-economic viability?
- storage is possible on subsurface and surface after transfer. Explore the possibility and needed geological and meteorological conditions. Again, Sahara desert, who should take initiative for initial feasibility report funding.
The second part of your write up -
Dams serve few purposes and some of those related to your query 1) Dams serve as storage of rainwater 2) Dams regulate and moderate flood. 3) During monsoon, excess rainwater is diverted to storage tanks, through canals, from large dams. On example is Sardar Sarofar on Narmada river.
There is plenty of storage capacity available for rainwater harvesting locally at initial stage and ground water depletion is common observation.
