Ganga will be cleaned and rejuvenated by July 2018 - Minister Of Water Resources assures

On 30 May 2018, at Agra, River activists organised "Sand Bath" to draw attention towards lack of water in the Yamuna river and green insect threat to the Taj Mahal.

On 28 April 2018, in Loksabha, responding to a series of supplementaries during Question Hour, Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti said she would announce in the House in July 2018 that the river has been cleaned and rejuvenated.

Either Honorable Minister does not know her job or making the people of India , a fool. How Ganga can be cleaned without releasing more water as per prescribed norms in it and its tributaries like Yamuna , in dry season and also in remaining period of the year, which is possible only if the use of water in agriculture sector is drastically reduced. MoWR has no plan to do it. Therefore Ganga can not be cleaned till this is done, whatever MoWR , GoI claim and assure. It is a great question mark why the Honourable Minister is playing with the sentiments of people of India raising hopes for cleaning and rejuvenating Ganga, which is not possible in near future, with present strategy.

  1. The years are given wrongly... If we integrate the legal authority under one roof, faster and better implementation can always be possible in a 5 to 8 years plan.

    1. A plan to be successful, it is essential that it chooses right solutions.  Without reducing the use of water in agriculture drastically, it is impossible to increase fair weather flow in rivers and their tributaries including Ganga to purify them. No efforts are being made in this direction. Therefore It is impossible to make Clean Ganga programme successful, in near future. Thanks to Water resources Minister, Clean Ganga Mission,  Central water Commission and Agriculture department, Govt of India for the failure.

  2. Governments should learn from mistakes of others besides its own but it does not. One may find on Engineers India website, two recent live tenders for REHABILITATION OF GHATS and Cremataria for stretches of Ganga in Uttrakhand and in Varanasi. The work of Interception of old Drains and Nullahs that discharge Sewerage/Storm water in to the river system --even at Ghats has yet not been attempted and if the same is attempted, it will have to excavate steps to reach the sewers/drains and redo / restore the steps. It is no different than Public Works Department first constructing the road and then digging to lay the sewers and other utilities !!! Why cant actionable Work Plan be dove tailed to minimise Costs? NG sure is getting into action mode but must find real and long terms answers to rejuvenate the River system.

  3. My guess is that getting The Ganga to be a class one river is likely to take twenty years. Building sewage treatment plants is expensive and time consuming. Control of industrial effluents needs a change in culture avoiding corruption and changes in the use of fertilisers needs a change of mindset in farming. Even then, non-point sources have to be tackled.

    1. I do not hope that without maintaining minimum water flow as per prescribed norms in different months of year in Ganga and its tributaries, Ganga can be cleaned and rejuvenated . The agriculture sector wants to use every drop of rivers and ground water in unscientific and haphazard unplanned manner, thanks to the Agriculture and Water Resources Ministry. It will be better for the NEETI AYOG / Ministry of Water Resources to start planning of, purifying sea water, for drinking and other water needs of India.

    2. It may be possible for Namame Gange to consider a simple Technical and Medium Term Proposal: Collect all Sewerage and Storm water Influents into a Garland Sewer along the banks. At downstream end, Pump the collected waste water away from Banks to low cost Flood Plains EVEN ACCROSS THE RIVER (as crowded development is not on both sides of the River downstream) and a combination of Lined Oxidation Ponds/ Reed Bed treatment and Lined Ponds for Bioremediation may be effective with final irrigable water pumped away from banks... Garland Sewers are a must and River Crossings at downstream of Garland Sewers can be optional from City to city basis...

  4. When over six decades of misgovernance and lackdazical rule of law enforcement brought Holy Gange to its present state of affairs, how can rejuvenation take place in few years..It shall have to be sincere, apolitical multipronged and a well planned effort for the entire river system with annual milestones and it c an even take a decade to restore Gange to its original purity level though its encroached boundaries, especially of its flood plains may never be the same.. GOI is and shall do its utmost with in its limitations of federal democracy to plan and implement..Most important is a storng and continuous enforcement to curb/ stop the poluuters and stopping the pollutants entering the river system despite legal protection accorded to the river systems..

  5. Natural resources needs to be planned at community level with no political color. Unfortunately politicians are being equalled even higher than God promising miracles. Ganga synonym to India can only be brought back to its prestine nature with people participation duly changing the lifestyle around Ganga
