Urban flooding is the annual phenomenon and somehow, we Indians have learnt to live with it! It is unfortunate that we lose precious lives each year in this unnecessary spectre of apathy and disdain. The loss of public property, inconvenience to commuters, colossal waste of imported fuel in the traffic jams and the epidemics that follow the flooding, have perhaps seemed to remain unsuccessful to wriggle us out of our slumber. How come, we forgot that it was the Water in our rivers that made our Gangetic plains so fertile, now those lifelines are running dry for almost whole of the year except the Monsoon when they just swell in anger to their fullest fury. While we can blame the climate change et all for the strife, we shall have to urgently devise ways and means to hold the rain on earth in its pristine state as much as we can and as soon as it falls on earth. The urban planners shall have to look at sustainable methods to augment the soak capacities in the little green patches we so woefully agreed to spare.
