Can Bengaluru’s wastewater reuse model solve Hyderabad’s water challenge?
Hyderabad: As Hyderabad prepares for rising water demand in the coming years, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has turned to Bengaluru to study a successful model of treating and reusing wastewater.
The officials are exploring whether similar technology can be adopted to strengthen the city’s long-term water security.
As part of this initiative, HMWSSB Joint Managing Director Mayank Mittal visited the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) in coordination with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) to study best practices in treated wastewater management and reuse.
Focus on treated wastewater reuse
During the visit, Mittal inspected the Kadubeesanahalli Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), where BWSSB has implemented a treated wastewater reuse project under the AMRUT 2.0 Technology Sub-Mission as part of the Pitch Pilot Initiative.
He reviewed the project’s operational framework, including the sewage treatment process, reuse mechanism and the distribution of treated water.

Studying technology and best practices
The HMWSSB team toured the project site to gain first-hand knowledge of the technologies deployed for wastewater treatment, system management, water distribution and end-use applications.
Officials also held detailed discussions with the technical team implementing the project to understand system operations, maintenance practices, implementation challenges and solutions adopted for the successful execution of the initiative.
Insights for Hyderabad in wastewater management
According to officials, the study visit provided valuable insights into the efficient utilisation of treated wastewater and sustainable management of water resources.
The knowledge gained from Bengaluru’s experience is expected to help HMWSSB evaluate advanced technologies and best practices that could be adopted to improve wastewater recycling and support Hyderabad's future water security, officials added.
