The National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a fine of Rs 12.42 crore on Naroda Enviro Projects Ltd (NEPL) — which manages the common effluent treatment plant (CETP) for a cluster of 172 industrial units — for polluting the Sabarmati since 2015. On Tuesday, NGT ordered NEPL to pay the fine to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) within two months. As the fine is towards compensation for environmental damage, GPCB has been directed to utilise the money to improve the environmental conditions in the CETP area at the Naroda Industrial Estate in consultation with NEPL within six months.
This action was in response to a complaint filed by Aryavart Foundation, an NGO, in 2015, based on a 2013 study by the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute at Bhavnagar. The study revealed that water samples from the Sabarmati were not fit for human consumption, and the contaminated water was used for agricultural purposes. The NGO demanded restrictions on the release of untreated effluents into the river and reparation for the environmental damage.
