Published on by Barkha Warade, Director
Supreme court says the Clean Ganga project is going slow, read the news here http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/india-s-river-cleaning/1600354.html
What do you think, is govt not fast enough to clean Ganga? or the bureaucrats makes it hard to stop littering and punish the industries for making the river dumping ground ?

For cleaning of rivers, a shared vision document is to be developed along with its dissemination for awareness creation amongst all stakeholders concerned so as to have a mass movement and people’s participation from all riparian States concerned. For developing coordinated actions, establishment of River Basin Organization at least for the major river basins, whose drainage areas are shared by two or more States at the first instant is to be made. Each riparian State may be made responsible for cleaning of the river stretches that are passing through its administrative boundary/jurisdictions and keeping them pollution free. Even the responsibility can further be sub-divided into zone wise and block wise. The action document may also be prepared in a time bound and phased manner keeping in view that any delay in action may further aggravate the problems, which may ultimately lead to become either impossible or more tedious for reversing from the severely polluted scenarios into that of a purified one. We should welcome the National Green Tribunal’s decision to impose heavy fines on those found guilty of polluting the river premises by way of disposal of untreated sewerages coming especially from urban conglomerations, wastewater and effluents discharging from industrial units and littering of wastes materials by individuals. Performance evaluation and time bound monitoring should also be in built in the vision document so that the accomplishment could be achieved within the time target, say by the end of first year -2015 by 50%, second year- 2016 by 80% and third year- 2017 by 100%. With a will and determination in action, the rivers of India can be made as pollution free and life lines for livelihoods and life sustenance.

The idea of fine for river pollution is interesting. Common man will be fined not the actual culprits.

Jancy, true. If govt can manage to fine culprits that would be the best part of the national river mission. Thanks for your wonderful insight.

The research is based on Bioremediation and it is using a bacteria still not having a name that was naturally isolated and it is accumulating within it all kinds of heavy metals which include Chromium,Arsenic,Lead and Copper. The full fledged experiments have been conducted using Chromium and It appears to be a protein responsible. Can share the paper published once I have your mail id.

Whether it is Govt. or the public, the concern for pollution of Ganga is always there. It is the strike of the right choice of approach and the milestone that shall enable us to move in right direction. It is pertinent to mention that one of the best way to progress in this direction is to have approach towards catchment protection. If the entire stretch of Ganga along with its catchment is demarcated and sector wise catchment protection approach is adopted we may definitely approach towards right direction of preventing Ganga from pollution. The participation of stakeholders is vital in this mission even greater role than the Govt.

The issue is very serious, solution is with engineers and technocrats, no doubts about it , lectures, suggestions are always delivering from politicians and bureaucrats. Points must be clear to all Indians, 1) Pollution can not reduce it always increase as population and Industries increases. 2) Different views from different mind can not solve the problem of Ganga it may make more complex the problem. 3) Naturally huge money input will require if we think for length and severity of problem. 4) Only way for ever solution is separate out two flows clean and polluted up to end of river Ganga. 5) or A group of power full engineers and technocrats be form to finalize single projects before delivery of confusing non technical and non feasible views.

I feel every single effluent creator has to treat the waste first and then throw it in river. Technology is the solution but awareness and will is the need..

Cleaning the Ganga is not a simple task it is highly complex task and require joint effort of all the concerning department, NGOs and community.

Only Water Resources department of Government of India is making efforts to clean Ganga. But what about other departments responsible for large scale pollution in Ganga? Industries department, building and road depart, mining department, local self government department, Municipal corporations, municipalities and other departments ? Whether these many departments have changed their rules and regulations so as not to allow pollution of Ganga. If notm, then in my opinion the project of cleaning Ganga and other rivers is not in right direction.

There is enormous human pressure on Ganga. Unless we understand the water availability (temporal and spatial) in Ganga vis a vis demands for Irrigation, drinking water etc we can not do anything substantial.

I offer this program: Organic Wastewater who alone can already cleaned all the rivers of India for about 30%. All hydraulic world environments serve Sanitation trash that dumps all human excrement in it. With Organic Sanitation, it's over, over on that side more pollution and treatment rejects recyclable immédatement purified water for the development of the vegetated biodiveristé. You who intervene on this forum, do know this invention in high places so that it enters the cleaning program.I offer this program: Organic Wastewater who alone can already cleaned all the rivers of India for about 30%. Punishing industries is not a solution that will be accepted by present govt. Moreover, it is more about domestic waste than industrial waste. So pointing diatribe solely against bureaucrats is not fair. First, cleaning River Ganga cant be a one time job, it has to be a continuous process. Next, mission cant be achieved just by main river, it has to be a holistic process covering its tributaries too. Third, if I am correct, 80% waste is from domestic n 20% is from industrial. Sufficient fund needs to be allocated. Fourth, Govt needs to rethink about continuing 3 Ministries for water. So someone can be made accountable. Fifth, Ganga is not just for India, BanglaDesh is also beneficiary. Approach sh accommodate transnational factor.

Absolutely.I tried helping govt. using the techniques of Biorememdiation and even submitted my proposal at NGT but its been two months and still no addressal to the issue, although am not asking anything from them,No infrastructure or electricity etc. This is called falling to deaf ears and negligence. When crores have been spent they cannot listen to bacteria's.Besides being slow it's sheer lack of will power. No everybody is eating out of bowl and once the river is cleaned this will stop so then why pay heed.

please share your research with us, it will be good to have something cheap and effective. Thanks Suhasini..

Hello Suhasini, I really appreciate your proposal and at the same time share your pain of your proposal which does not require much infrastructure, investments and electricity. Sounds quite environment friendly. Can you please share some more details on my email skochar@halosource.com Regards, Shaminder
