Chennai Rain and Flood Disaster - time to think about unplanned urbanisation
Published on by Upal De Silva, Manager Community mobilisation
Dear frined heavy rain in Chennai and the flood resulted is causing not only an emotional damage to society but also has a heavy toll on economy.
Time to introspect- for me the reasons are clear - the existing infrstucture is not sufficient for the hugely gowing city. This is a classic exmaple of unplanned urbanisation infrastucture failure.

How true!!! This is not only the case in Chennai but in all major towns and cities. To make matters worse is the extremely poor quality of drainagae systems along roads. This is very very poor in Delhi, the national capital of India. What would be state of affairs in rest of India, one can easliy imagine.

Drainage problem being common in most of the urban areas, there is a need to establish a regulatory authority to ensure that safety guidelines are not flouted in formation of layouts, provision of basic environmental & essential services and for logical assessment of property taxes.
