Mombasa Fishermen Decry Raw Sewerage Dumped into the Indian Ocean (Video)

Haji Ramadhan who started fishing in 1999 says their nets are catching more wastes than fish with each foray into the ocean.

In urban creeks of Tudor, Mtwapa and Makupa, meanwhile, the culprit is raw sewage generated from homes, Institutions, hospitals in areas that have malfunctioning sewage treatment plant or none at all.

Just 15 per cent of households in Mombasa city is connected to the public sewer system, according to Mombasa Water Supply & Sanitation Company Limited.

Consequently, raw sewage is often discharged into the ocean directly from unconnected sources through stormwater drains and partially treated sewage from the treatment systems.
It has become so severe that scientists and researchers believe there is a threat to the health, the livelihoods and way of life of the ocean dependents.
