Farm loan waivers and making farmers financially strong
Published on by Yogesh Agrawal, Director (retired), Minor irrigation schemes, Water Resources Department at Govt of Rajasthan in Business
I fully agree with Ms Arundhati Bhattacharya Chairperson of State Bank of India, that farm loan waiver schemes must be avoided and other ways to help farmers must be found out to make them financially strong. Number of farmer suicides is increasing every year, as the farmers do not get adequate income from farm yields. It looks the governments in India are not acting properly to help small and marginal farmers. Cost of farm inputs is increasing every year. Farmers do not have advanced accurate knowledge of whether, for which Government of India must arrange, so that they may properly plan their farming actions accordingly. Small and marginal farmers do not get farm inputs at reasonable rates and after harvesting do not get proper cost of their products. The water use efficiency in India is only about 40 percent and India is among the nations having lowest yields per hectare land, in the world. Union government and the state governments in India are not serious to help farmers so that they may economically become strong and loan waiver is not required for them. I thought after swearing in of Modi Govt. in year 21014, things will change. But it looks nothing has changed to help small and marginal farmers to make them economically strong. The Modi Govt. must give due weightage to the opinion of Ms Arundhati Bhattacharya Chairperson of State Bank of India.

I also agree with the views of Mr. Yogesh Aggarwal. There is no method for mechanization in farming. We must do this to increase the yield with less water. It has to start form Research Institutes and Agriculture Collages. Loan Waiver is not the solution.
Secondly we are doing Injustice to the farmers who have repaid their loans after lot of struggle. This will send the wrong message among the farmers not to repay the loans. Are we going to give them the paid loans?

It looks the governments in India are working against the small ans marginal farmers. The governments are wasting water of rivers and dams, which is evident from the water use efficiency of about 40 percent, against 80 to 90 percent of most of the nations of the world. The governments are encouraging & rewarding farmers & other people who are wasting water. Governments in India do not wish to stop wastage of water and do not wish that it reaches all the needy farmers timely and in desired quantity. Similarly the per hectare yield of crops in India is among lowest in the world. Governments in India do not wish to increase it. Governments in India do not wish to make the small and marginal farmers economically sound.
